African diaspora should listen to continent’s call
The appeal last week by Tanzania President Jakaya Kikwete to Africans in the Diaspora to look to the African continent for their roots, self esteem and mutual benefits, should be taken seriously by the 170 million people who trace their origin from the African continent. When addressing the 5th International Africans in Diaspora Heritage Trail Conference in Dar es Salaam, President Kikwete was practically voicing the African wishes to their brothers and sisters scattered across the world in mostly developed countries. He told the hundreds of Africans in the Diaspora who attended the conference, mostly from the Americas, Europe, the West Indies and African countries, that Africa is aware that those living in the USA along have US$ 750 billion worth of assets. Only $32 billion of this is sent to Africa annually mostly in remittances globally. Kikwete told the conference that Africa is not interested to get handouts, far from it, it requests a small proportion of their resources to be made available to help developments in their mother continent. He urged them to transform the Dar conference into a process of building the bridges to make this happen. He was quick to explain that Africa seeks their investment resources, transfer of their skills and technology for progress by taking advantage of a myriad of investments opportunities for mutual benefits. The African continent, from North to South, East to West, is full of investments opportunities ranging from tourism, hospitality industry, mining of precious gems, metals and oil, fishing, banking, transport, agriculture and services, among others areas of investments. The Western media has not helped the Africa either, as it has biased itself against the continent by writing only negative aspects of the African continent. The good things are rarely publicized. This too remains a challenge to African leaders and the Africans in the Diaspora to correct the image. Besides internet and technology has made the world one village through globalisation. The conference was a good start for the Africans in the Diaspora, but they ought to speed up before the investment opportunity window gets clogged up as in their countries of birth. |
